interviews

This interview was for the first Denver Academy Yearbook that I sponsored. I used it as a journalism sample for students.

Michael Lee is one of the most active students in the Denver Academy Theater program and I had the good fortune to talk with him about his role in Sylvia, this year’s comedy presentation. “My favorite part about acting is that it allows me to be someone else,” he said. “For example, my character in Sylvia had absolutely no social skills whatsoever. It gave me a new perspective.” When I asked Michael about the funniest scene in the play, he said he could hardly keep a straight face when Greg (his character) walked in on Kate (his wife) and Sylvia (his dog) right before they were about to get in a fight and asked, “Can I play too?” The toughest scene was the one when he was interviewed by Leslie, the therapist. “For personal reasons, it hit so close so home, that is was hard to stay in character.” He said. Michael put in over three hundred hours to memorize and rehearse six hundred lines for Sylvia. Next year Michael will be studying theater at East Tennessee State University.

This was an interview that I recently wrote for the Cherry Creek High School Lady Bruins swim team yearbook.

This year, we wanted to hear from Eric Craven, the head coach of the Lady Bruins swim team for almost thirty years. I was curious to find out what this one-time gold, and two-time bronze medal winner from the 1977 World Games for the Deaf had to say. What was your most memorable moment as an athlete?” I asked. “When I ran a triathlon with my wife and finished it!” he laughed. Eric was especially proud of this year’s freshmen & sophomores when they won the Greeley West Invite because “It speaks well for the team’s future.” He was also happy to see the Cherry Creek Diving coach, Grant Robinson, win CHSAA Diving Coach of the Year. “After being on the nomination ballet for ten years, he finally won the award!” he said, and smiled with a twinkle in his eye.
